How to Speak With an Australian Accent

While the "crocodile-hunter" accent is commonly associated with Australia, the every-day accent provides less of a dramatic emphasis when pronouncing words. So here is a how-to guide on cracking the average Aussie accent.

   Get the mentality behind the language. The most commonly mimicked Aussie accent is of a rough, messy, casual and animated style. The accent itself requires using your tongue, cheeks and lips to almost “chew” the words as you say them. As you continue on with this article, practice chewing the words until the example words soundAustralian.

   Focus on the vowels. These are the most important part of having a realistic Aussie accent. Words should always have the emphasis on the vowels (with few exceptions). All other parts of the sentence should almost be glossed over as far as learning the accent. In this case, the vowel will be listed, then the pronunciation (with sample American words to emphasise the sound) and then an example of how a word should sound in an Australian accent.
   
   A sounds like “or” or “ayee” (AUtomatic or stAY) For example, Aussie sounds like “Or-zie” and mate sounds like “M-ayee-t”
   
   E sounds like “e” without pronouncing the r (knEEling) For example, Need sounds like “Ner-ee-d”
   
   I sounds like “ear” or “eye” (pIErce or mIght) For example, irresponsible sounds like “ear-re-spon-sbl” and Hide sounds like “H-eye-d”
   
   O sounds like “ew” or “aw” (shOO or OUght) For example, shoot sounds like “sh-ew-t”
   
   U sounds like “uh” (rOUgh) For example, suppose sounds like “sugh-p-oh-s”

   Learn the end words. Often the accent cuts words short. The emphasis should never be on the end of the word unless it ends in a vowel.
   
   Words ending in “ER” now end in “ah”. For example, “Together” sounds like “tuh-geth-ah”
   
   Words ending in a “G” are cut off. For example, “Catching” sounds like “Cat-chn”
   
   Words ending in an "E" are also cut off. For example, "Mate" sounds like "M-ayee-t."

   The Stress is in the vowels. Stressing the vowels rather than certain words makes up a sentence. For example, “The Aussie language is pretty weird” becomes “Th-a oz-zie l-aye-nguage is pr-i-tty we-ee-rd.”

   The rhythm of speaking is different from the American accent in that sentences are said in one fluid motion. Think of the sentences you are saying them in cursive. Meaning, that the words are distinct but almost flowing into each other. The end of sentences are risen as if questions. For example, “The Aussie language is pretty weird” becomes “Tha oz-zie l-aye-nguage is pr-i-tty we-ee-rd.”

   Practice, practice, and then practice some more. Start by re-reading this entire article out-loud with the accent. Aussie accents have personality, so add a playful and happy tone when speaking. It makes the world of a difference.

Generally, we don't hold back with what's on our mind. Again, generally, we are educated and often well travelled. We have generally been exposed to a wide variety of cultures within our own milieu and most often, have appreciation of them. We, again generally, have open hearts and minds. Yes, we are independent and can hold our own, yet we long for someone to fill that hole in our hearts, while still maintaining our our sense of self. We, generally don't hold grudges. We love life and live life like we love it and to hell with anyone who stands in our way!

The Oz chick is a good sheila. As a kid she wants to fix your car for you. By mid teens she's into cooking dinner. There's a period there between 17-20 you don't really want to get in her face because everything's an argument. Before she's married she will actually get beers from the fridge and laughs at all your mate's jokes. Once you do the deed she clings like a limpet and it's really very sweet to experience, though don't make her jealous because she will actually punch out any competitors. At this point she's a champagne blonde with a hot body and a ton of courage, her motto is try anything and turn lead into gold. After marriage she just gets better (so I've heard) and becomes a responsible mother you could leave the neighbourhood kids with and has the right answers to everything. Has a natural instinct for veggie gardens and gets on great with animals and wildlife, who'll just follow her around. By this point she's the one sitting around having beers and cracking the funny jokes, and the older she gets the kinder her face looks. Bloody smart too, though she'd probably never admit it.





The female of the species, while smaller in stature, is far more loud and aggressive than the male. While the males tend to be very friendly and congregate with other males, the females spend most of their time in supermarkets and shopping malls, using a shrill high-pitched call to discipline their children and contact other females. Males and females rarely interact socially except during breeding season, which is otherwise known as Friday night. During this time, females are allowed to enter the male-dominated area known as "the pub" and display their impressive coloured plumage to a prospective mate.

Understanding Australian Text

To whomever is reading this. 


Firstly I will explain something to you, I am Australian. You are probably not. 

In Australia we have a thing called humour. (yes the spelling is correct, we use a "u" in the word down here.) And an integral part of this humour is called "sarcasm". A loose definition of the term sarcasm could be "a sharply ironical or cutting remark". I could go into depth of the origin of this national predisposition to this sort of humour, but I feel it would bore you. If you are abreast of the concept of sarcasm you will notice I have already used it in an earlier sentence.

I will help you to understand our humour (still with the "u"). See us Australians understand your brand of what you call humor. (note no "u" as it is US based humor). Your humor is easy to understand, you conveniently place canned laughter in the soundtrack so we know when it is funny. Or an event happens, for example Al Bundy will flush a toilet and the audience will cheer, or a man gets slapped with a wet fish, and we know then we are supposed to laugh because it is funny. I find this concept funny. Funny stuff that. Ok, to help you understand Australian humour in future I will insert several "markers" so you don't confuse my humour with trolling.

In future if I am being sarcastic, I will place the tags [sarcasm] and [/sarcasm] around the statement. In fact, the simple act of just placing the tags would constitute sarcasm. I quite like this already. We are progressing well.

If I place a joke that in any way might pass over some peoples heads I will place a tag [canned laughter] so you don't miss it, and you can then chuckle as you read, knowing full well I have just told a joke.

And if I tell a real rip snorter of a joke I will place [Al Bundy flushes toilet]. Sweet.
Now we are enjoying a new found level of cross Pacific understanding and friendship.

What happened to Spring?

What happened to Spring in Ohio? Is delayed somewhere and too comfortable to return?
Warm temperatures and outdoor activities is sorely missed!

Winter was long and very cold with more snow than recorded in 20 years here in Ohio!

Global warming or whatever is affecting the changes in temperatures has me with mixed feelings on what the weather will be like when it does finally sort itself out. Bring back Spring weather!

I'm back!!!

I have been sorely lacking in posting on my blog but having found my way back in to my account again I'm back! I am guilty of being distracted by life but will make an attempt to catch up on the past few years.

After experiencing the worst winter I have ever been through in my lifetime I could well do with some reminiscing of warm summer places in Australia. Snow that was once a novelty after spending the winter in Ohio is something I could happily forego without seeing again for many years to come.

The smell of the ocean, the salt in the air and breeze off the ocean, the sounds of waves crashing as they roll in to the shore and the feel of sand on bare feet. That is what I miss.

Skin care Review Murad

I had been wanting to try the Murad Skin Care range for some time and decided to give the Achieve Ageless Complete Skin Renewal Kit a try to see if I liked it. I had previously been using the Victoria Principal Skincare range and after seeing the infomercials on tv (yes I fall for the infomercials) I wanted to give it a try and see if I liked it better. The Murad site itself was a bit too expensive for my liking of trying the product so I went ebay shopping. I found what I wanted and ordered a Kit. The kit I found was for day wear.

The Kit came with sample sizes of 1x Refreshing Cleanser 45ml/1.5oz 1x Perfecting Day Cream SPF30 21ml/0.7oz 1x Age Reform Complete Reform 10ml/0.33oz 1x Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture 7.5ml/0.25oz

The cleanser has a pleasant aroma and did leave my skin feeling clean. The Perfecting cream and Age Reform were fun to use and my favorite is the Hydro Dynamic 8 hour Ultimate Moisture. It really made my skin regain its moisture and kept it feeling great all day.

Murad did make a difference to my skin and encouraged me to try anther of their products with a focus on the evening skin care range. With a little bit of ebay shopping I found the Resurgence Evening Travel Kit.

Like the day skin care range I also enjoyed all that it offered. I wasn't as keen on the scent but it doesn't seem to linger and the Kit contained the following.

1.5 fl oz Renewing Cleansing Cream; 0.5 fl oz Hydrating Toner; 0.33 fl oz Age-Diffusing Serum; 0.6 fl oz Age-Balancing Night Cream. This is sold as a Travel Kit.

Will update when I have used this a bit longer but so far Murad has me hooked. If you want to give it a try shop around on ebay where you can get sample sizes for a great price before putting your hard earned money in to the full sizes.

2012 Welcome to the New Year

Bit of a late start to blogging for the year but better late than never. Happy Valentines to all and may your year be filled with lots of love and happiness. I am looking forward to spring and warm weather and getting outdoors again. Winter although mild this year in comparison to the past few years is still cold and I miss the warm summers of Australia and the salty ocean breezes which tend to cool things down at night. Simple things like the colour of the clouds as the sun sets or the fragrance of a jasmine vine are on the mind. Memories of looking out a window at the tall gum trees silhouetted against a clear blue sky and the melodic sound of the ever present wildlife in the background. New Years Resolution was to have a better year than the last (a resolution that should be within reach) and to live a healthier lifestyle. Blog more is on the "list" and I hope to do more random blogs soon. Until the next blog enjoy a memory.

Sydney - New South Wales - Australia

I've have lived all over Australia and if I had to choose a place to visit it's virtually impossible to say just one. Each State has it's own attractions and its own weather. To visit Australia you would need months if not longer to actually get in the full ambiance of the country. 

If you were planning a quick trip you would be wise to research each State first and then choose where you wish to visit to get to see as much as possible for your stay. As I would like to give at least some detail of each State I will stick to one per blog. Today's blog being Sydney.

Sydney, New South Wales is of course, one of the more popular destinations for tourists. It is also the most expensive State to live in with the cost of living being higher than other States. Sydney is well known for the being a city built on hills surrounding Sydney Harbour. The suburbs are surrounded by national parks and bays and beaches. The most publicised beach being Bondi Beach. Catch the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay for great views of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Explore the . historic North Head with breathtaking Sydney Harbour views.

You can visit Sydney Opera House, go for the climb of the Sydney Harbour Bridge or stop in to the Toronga Zoo. There is a multitude of night life and restaurants and of course plenty of places to shop. Whether it's a visit to the Sydney Aquarium or a ferry ride around the Bay. You won't be bored!


Weather in Sydney is warm summers and mild winters. Rain is spread throughout the year and of late there has been a lot of flash flooding. 

As Sydney is moderated by its proximity to the ocean the further out you go the warmer it gets. January is the warmest month with temperatures averaging between 25.8 C (78F) up to 45.3 C (113.5 F). In winter with the coldest month being July the temperatures rarely drop below 5 C (41F).


Sydney with its great climate makes outdoors living a way of life. It is like most of Australia laid back and relaxing but at the same time exciting and full of hustle and bustle.


Take some time to travel further out than the actual city and visit some of the national parks. Go see the Blue Mountains or the Three Sisters. Visit the national parks as well as the tourist destinations. Hire a car or get on a tour and enjoy what Sydney has to offer. 

Try local foods as well as the variety of international influences that have become part of cuisine in Australia. Get fresh fish from fisherman's wharf in the bay or just stop in to any of the local "fish and chip" shops and have it all cooked for you.

Most of the parks and even the beaches have bbq facilities there so you could enjoy cooking outdoors and enjoy the outdoor way of life and take in the sights at the same time. Chat with the locals and I'm sure they will direct you to good local spots that are worth a visit too.

Thinking about Guitars and a Trip Down Memory Lane

It's time to take a trip down memory lane. Guitar memory lane that is. 

I was in a mood for thought and started to think of the kinds of guitars that I have owned. Which one's were my favorite to play and which have sadly gone on to the great guitar heaven in the sky or ended up at no longer being in my possession.

When I first started to play I started with a Yamaha nylon 6 string. I wasn't sure at that stage whether I would be any good at it or that it would become one of my passions. 

All I knew was that I loved to sing and if I had my own instrument (apart from my own voice) I would be able to sing anything. I didn't like being restricted in the choice of songs I could sing by the recorded music I had available. I was and still am a huge Jewel fan and after reading that she had also taught herself to play I was ready for the challenge.

I asked around people that I knew online and offline that played guitar, as to what was the best to get. I was all set in my head to turn in to a heavy metal electric guitar hair whipping rocker chick! I listened to the advice I was given and started to look for an acoustic. I was told if you can play an acoustic you can play anything. That seemed solid advice to me. I never did turn in to that heavy metal hair whipping rocker chick. Instead I fell in love with the sound of the acoustics.  I headed off to the local pawn shop as I didn't want to spend much money until I knew what I was going to be doing with it. I really didn't know anything about guitars and upon the advice of the store clerk decided on the yamaha. It came with new strings and although he did show me how to tune it I think I had forgotten by the time that I left the shop.

I struggled but persisted with teaching myself how to play. I had help from online musicians from all over the world from what was to be come known as the "Acoustic Pond". Feel free to visit my links if you wish to know more about "Acoustic Pond". 

If I got stuck I asked for help and if it meant over a web cam to show me what to do or from a book.  One of my dear friends who was actually a great musician would also time after time come over and very patiently restring my guitar. Show me how to do it numerous times. Then get called back yet again to do it all over again. There wasn't the options there is today of lessons online and videos. It would have been a lot easier if I had the sites online there is today that you can find on searches or on youtube.

I eventually wanted to switch to a steel string guitar and did actually put steel strings on my poor yamaha and it gave the most awesome sound I liked it better that way. This is not suggested or advised as its bad for a guitar that's designed for nylon strings. I liked the sound though and as it was mine I really didn't care and that's how it stayed until it ended up being given to a friend.

My next purchase was a black Takamine. I loved this guitar. This was my first big purchase from a guitar shop and even though it was second hand it still cost me some money but it was well worth it. I would have no hesitation buying one of these again. I have so many great memories of this guitar. Just mentioning it sends my thoughts down memory lane and all the great times I had with it. This beautiful specimen of melodic joy had an very untimely and distressing ending. I had her resting on her guitar stand and she lost the fight with my vacuum cord and ended up crashing down on to a marble floor causing the head to completely snap from the neck! If anyone else had been involved in her untimely passing I would probably still not be speaking to them. 

After poor Takamine finding her way up to guitar heaven I then fell in love with a Cort electric/acoustic steel string cutaway. 

She has brought me many years of joy and I'm hoping to have her out of storage soon and back in to my hands. I fell in love with her the instant I played her and it was one of those "just must have it" purchases.  She can be seen in many of my older videos on youtube. Being an electric acoustic I have the option of plugging her in so I did get part way to my original rocker chick image.

I would also recommend this guitar particularly for females as the neck is great for small hands. Something a female player has to be aware of is the size of the neck of the guitar and the ease of playing on it. I like that it can be simply plugged in on the side to an amp and then you can play with the sound with the switches. 

That brings me to another favorite of mine. He is currently keeping my Cort company until its back in my hands again. I do refer to all of my guitars usually as "she". This one though by the size of the neck and by the deeper sound of the guitar than the others I have mentioned, to me is a "he".

callouses that are harder on the skin than a 6 string guitar. Double the strings also means more wear and tear on the fingers.

 I love the sound of a 12 string guitar and this has a unique sound of its own. I tend to use this for very simple songs to make them sound more intricate than they actually are. It does tend to shred the fingers with the 12 fingers but its well worth the callouses.

My current choice of musical pleasure is an Aria. She has fit very well in to my collection of lovable music makers and I would again recommend her to anyone wanting a simplistic sound and easy neck to handle. She can be seen in my more recent videos on youtube. Although she hasn't seen as much use as my other guitars we are still getting acquainted.

Having two young children that tend to like to mute my strings or climb all over me every time I attempt to play has been hindering my abilities. I do have to laugh at the antics though and hope they too will be avid guitar enthusiasts and inherit the passion for acoustic guitars. 

My now 5 year old has a few of his own videos and has appeared in many of mine since he was a baby. Some videos that I have taken of him when he is just enjoying playing and singing. His most memorable video being his "cheese" song where all the lyrics are "cheese, cheese and cheese". Other memorable ones where where he basically takes over my own video. One that particularly comes to mind is when we were both outside while I recorded a video of me doing a cover of Jewel song called "I do".

He definitely makes his presence known and I put that particular video up mainly as it made me laugh so much. I played it back watching him kick and run through the entire thing.

He and his younger brother both have guitars of their own. I am putting my foot down at getting them a drum kit as I really don't think I would ever get them to stop.

There is also a cover of Arms of Angel where my youngest makes his own special appearance too. Both these videos feature my Aria.

On a lasting note I have my wish list. My wish list of guitars would have to be a Maton. These guitars are only made in Australia and have a truly unique sound of their own.  I hope to own one day. My wish list maton is a mini maton!!! Perfect in size for someone such as myself.
